2024 Cabernet Franc - New Release
The 2024 Cabernet Franc exhibits an intensity that is truly remarkable for a wine from the Finger Lakes region. The aroma reveals notes of gentle, warm soil, ripe red berries, and a touch of floral nuances. On the palate, it presents a rich, tarry, and smoky character, boasting substantial density and weight. The finish delivers a compelling blend of enduring tannins and robust power.
Winemakers Notes:
- Estate Cabernet Franc.
- Aged for nine months in French, American, and Hungarian barrels.
- Fermented at lower temperatures to boost fruit flavors, with regular pumping over to improve color and structure.
The 2024 growing year was characterized by warmth and dryness. Spring arrived early, and despite some frost concerns, there was no significant damage, unlike in 2023. The crop was abundant and healthy, consistently maturing 10 to 14 days ahead of schedule. Aside from occasional rainfall, primarily at the end of September, the fall remained quite dry, allowing for the timely harvest of fruit as it reached optimal ripeness. The red wines produced this year are outstanding, exhibiting a density and concentration that is quite rare for the region.
Cabernet Franc is often seen as the middle child among Bordeaux varieties. While it may not possess the structure and power of Cabernet Sauvignon, nor the plush fruitiness of Merlot, it tends to be underestimated. However, this varietal has found an exceptional home in the Finger Lakes region. It ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and is more resilient than Merlot during the winter months. These viticultural advantages, combined with its remarkable blend of elegance and strength, have propelled Cabernet Franc to the forefront of Finger Lakes red wines.
